Anthony Davis Will Decide the Lakers Season

Anthony Davis

The NBA is only a quarter of the way through their season. It is difficult to say which teams will be locks for the playoffs, and which teams will undoubtedly miss the postseason. There are some exceptions, as the Boston Celtics look prime for another NBA Finals run, while the San Antonio Spurs look like they are headed for the NBA lottery.

However, the middle is where most NBA teams lie, and is where the biggest franchise in the NBA lies, the Los Angeles Lakers. The Lakers currently sit at 10-12 on the season, but are on a hot streak right now. Are they serious title contenders? It all relies on if Anthony Davis can continue to play at an MVP level or if he returns to last season form and more injuries occur.

Anthony Davis Is Changing the Lakers Season

The Los Angeles Lakers have won eight of their last 10 games, and have seemed to find their identity. A large reason why Blake doesn’t look so good, has been the incredible return of forward Anthony Davis. Davis is putting up in MVP-like numbers, and is coming off of 855 Point, 19 rebound performance, that put him in the upper echelon of legendary Laker games.

As much praise as LeBron James gets as the leader, and best player for the Lakers, it is Anthony Davis who would decide where the Lakers go this season. The 2020 season that’s how the Los Angeles Lakers win the NBA championship; it was due to how well of accommodated James and Anthony Davis were, with Anthony Davis arguably being the figurehead of the team in that time.

Last season, Davis was riddled with injuries, and had lackluster performances, and the Lakers team were poor because of it. It is simple; the Lakers season will rely on how good an athlete Anthony Davis can be.

Lakers Must Build Around Anthony Davis

While the Los Angeles Lakers have LeBron James and Anthony Davis, they still need more players around them. The Lakers need to focus on depth, rather than stars. There are rumors that the Lakers are trying to target stars like Bradley Beal, Draymond Green, etc. The Lakers should look at what they have done for Lonnie Walker, and how well he has changed his career with Los Angeles and attempt to repeat that process.

The Lakers do not need more MVP-caliber players or aging stars to try to grab a playoff spot; they need to build around the already MVP-caliber player they have in Davis. Fivethirtyeight only gives the Lakers a 19% chance at making the playoff at the moment and a 0.3% chance of winning the championship. The Lakers need to boost those numbers up with role players before going in for another star.
