After becoming the youngest player to ever win the MVP award, the future seemed very bright for Derrick Rose. He was leading the Chicago Bulls to become one of the top teams in the NBA. However, he suffered several injuries during his career, which ultimately stunted his growth as an NBA talent.
At the beginning of his career, Derrick Rose was clearly on pace to become a future Hall-of-Famer, but at this point in his career, it isn’t as clear whether or not he should be inducted into the Basketball Hall-of-Fame.
Case Against
If Derrick Rose did not make the Hall-of-Fame, he would likely be the only MVP winner in NBA history to not make the Hall-of-Fame. The MVP award indicates that Derrick Rose was the best player in the NBA in 2011. That is a pretty significant achievement to accomplish, which is why MVP winners usually make the Hall-of-Fame.
Outside of his MVP season, Derrick Rose hasn’t accomplished much in his NBA career. He has never won an NBA championship, and he has only averaged over 20 points per game one season after winning the MVP.
The ACL injury that kept Derrick Rose out of the 2012-13 season was a true setback for his career. He had a few glimpses of his old self, but he was never the same player. Since that injury, he has never played more than 66 games in a season. He has mostly played around 50 games each season, but once played as low as 10 games for the whole season.
Derrick Rose has become no more than a role player in the NBA. He has mainly been a role player every season after his injury. Role players do not make the Hall-of-Famer; stars do. Unfortunately for Derrick Rose, he only had a few seasons of stardom.
Case For
Rose’s Hall-of-Fame consideration relies solely upon his MVP season in 2011, but it was a very impressive season. He averaged 25 points per game and 7.7 assists per game while playing 81 games during the regular season. He led the Chicago Bulls to the best record in the NBA.
Not only were the numbers impressive, but the context of his MVP season was also impressive for Derrick Rose. At age 22, he became the youngest player in NBA history to win the award. That record-breaking achievement should earn him serious Hall-of-Fame consideration.
Rose is one of the most beloved players in the NBA. While that doesn’t necessarily add anything to his case to make the Hall-of-Fame, everyone is rooting for Derrick Rose. After everything he has been through during his career, he deserves to make the Hall-of-Fame.
Conclusion
Rose had trouble dealing with injuries throughout his career. Many NBA stars and Hall-of-Famers also had injury issues during their career, such as Tracy McGrady and Grant Hill.
Rose should make the Hall-of-Fame. His MVP season alone should be enough to get him there. However, winning a championship as a role player should help solidify his case to make the Hall-of-Fame. Hopefully, Rose can win a championship before he retires and earn a spot in the Hall of Fame.
