The NBA G League has been on a roll this year, producing more star talent at all ages. Breakout performances, heightened viewership and new ideas have sprouted the G League from a lesser name to a prominent basketball powerhouse.
We have seen incredible former NBA talent make its way to the G League, and two of the biggest signings have occurred in the last week. The teams that signed these players may have drastically increased in championship odds, and may have completely altered their trajectory. These players are not only stars in their own right, but they will make their teams better in every way.
Andre Roberson – Oklahoma City Blue
Former Thunder role player Andre Roberson found his way back to OKC with the Blue. After only 5 games in 2020, he has not seen an NBA court since. During his time, he was a great defensive player, with decent scoring and rebounding statistics.
His best year was 2016 when he played 30 minutes a game, almost 7 points and 5 rebounds with a steal and a block. He was a defensive menace, with a 76 overall in NBA 2k for 3 years. He now finds his way to the G League, where he can flex his defensive prowess and defensive dominance.
Tony Snell – Maine Celtics
The 9 year vet and consistency king Tony Snell finds his way to Maine to play with the incredible Maine Celtics. He is well known not only for breaking record and being a part of the 50/50/100 club, but also posting zero statistics while playing over 20 minutes in a game.
He comes into this year with half of last season having been played in the NBA in 2021. He averages 6 points per game over his 9 year career, with his best time spent on a team was in Milwaukee in 2016.
He averaged 8.5 points and 3 rebounds in 80 games, with 45% from the field and 40% from three. He is a big guard that rarely misses free throws, and Maine has been looking for stretch wings.
The Maine Celtics are already a powerhouse in G League basketball, and finding great scoring in him is perfect. Andre Roberson will fill a very vital role in OKC, and his defense will be vital. Both teams are middle of the packj in their respective conferences. Both teams have near a .500 record, and they have not been dominant on both sides of the ball.
Prolific scoring and former NBA talent riddle free agency and the G League. Some of the best players in the NBA come from the minor leagues, with great play spreading across the country. The young players of the Ignite show up, and the superstars of the second round are everywhere.
However, Tony Snell and Andre Roberson bring a unique sense of experience and patience at the wing positions. These two teams have found great talent, and should drastically improve to championship favorites.
