Will the Lakers Make Moves Before the Trade Deadline?

Lakers Make Moves

LeBron James suffered a high ankle Sprain this past Saturday (03/20) vs the Hawks

The Lakers keep facing adversity as James suffered a high ankle sprain when they were facing the Atlanta Hawks Saturday afternoon. LeBron is expected to miss “several weeks” after getting injured, and was seen wearing a boot on Sunday vs the Suns.

Anthony Davis was injured just over a month ago (2/15) vs the Nuggets, and it does not seem to get better as it was confirmed he would also miss an additional two weeks, and from there it is not guaranteed he will play.

The Trade deadline is this Thursday (03/25 3pm EST) and as it approaches, the Lakers might have to make some moves to stay competitive in a tightly contested Western Conference.

Immediate needs

Since AD was injured, it was obvious that Los Angeles struggled inside as they do not have many big men options. Last year the Lakers had Dwight Howard and JaVale McGee which both were solid on their way to win a Championship.

The difference is that they had shot blockers to protect the rim, and obviously when AD was hurt, they struggled at that. LA is in the bottom 10 in the NBA with points allowed in the paint (48.7) per game.

Marc Gasol has been injured and that has created more problems for them defending the paint. Gasol has been productive on the defensive end this season, but struggles to get in games due to condition and getting in potential foul trouble.

Potential moves for a star player

Ok, now we know that the Lakers are without AD for at least another two weeks, and without LeBron for “several weeks” (6-8 weeks on average for a high ankle sprain), what moves might they make?

As Thursday approaches, LA has to make some big decisions. Alex Caruso and Dennis Schroder are their primary ball handlers, and also their main playmakers. Without LeBron, this is also an area they might want to improve on.

Many are saying they should make a big move for a potential All-star or All-star level player. Although it could potentially help them, it can also hurt their chemistry if they get rid of some established players that are part of their rotation.

Either way, they do need to make some moves, here are some potential trades

  • Andre Drummond has been in every trade rumor as he has not played since 2/12 this season because the Cavs are firm on trading him. It is most likely he gets a buyout and a team can sign him.
  • It was reported today that the Lakers are listening to trade offers for Montrezl Harrell, and the Hornets being the only team interested right now. Devonta Graham would be a nice pick up for them as it strengths their guard play
  • The Rockets have made Victor Oladipo available, but are looking for at least 1 first round, and they might not be very interested in the Lakers pick.

Either way, look for the Lakers to make some moves before the trade deadline.
