Luka Dončić: Spanish Sensation

Luka Dončić: Spanish Sensation

There are few that captivate the NBA like Luka Dončić has in his short career. The only one I can think of that has received much hype is Luka Dončić before it even came into the NBA. Luka is the hottest ticket in Dallas.

He continues to amaze spectators on a nightly basis, from his wild trick shots To his step-back dagger threes, Luka Doncic is quickly becoming the next face of the NBA.

Born in Slovenia, Luka Dončić played for his local basketball league. It wasn’t until he was 16 that he moved to Madrid to be able to play with the FIBA basketball team Real Madrid (yes, that is a real basketball team in Spain).

Early Life of Luka Dončić

Luka Dončić has always had a passion and love for basketball the time was a young child. In fact, his mother is quoted as saying that he was able to pick up a basketball at seven months old. Apart from basketball, Dončić also played other sports, including football. However, his love for basketball remained.

When he was a little older, he began playing basketball at a primary school in Slovenia, facing opponents as old as ten. However, Luka continues to impress. Even today, in his game, you can see that he still plays with a humbleness about himself.

In an interview with Slovenian TV, he said he wore the number seven earlier in his career in honor of Greek basketball player Vasilis Spanolious. He also stated that his idol, whom he models his game after, is LeBron James.

Fast forward to more current times, Luka was the third overall pick in the 2018 NBA draft. During that year, he received the accolade of rookie of the year for 2019. He is currently a four-time NBA All-Star and is sure to have more. He has even earned the respect of Dallas maverick legends such as Dirk Nowitzki.

I honestly thought that the NBA would never get Luka Dončić to come to the league because, in his career at Madrid, he was very Coveted by many officials over at the organization. But, thankfully, Luka Dončić is making his impact known and felt across the league.

I believe he will Cement his mark on the league in a shorter timeframe than many expect. In fact, I would be bold to say I don’t think it is too long until he has his statue outside American Airlines Center.

Cultural Impact

As far as cultural impact is concerned, Luka has redefined what it means to be a superstar. In today’s NBA, his jersey is often the top-selling jersey on nba.com, often outselling LeBron James at the last check. The Puerto Rican rapper Bad Bunny has mentioned, Dončić and several of his songs, including 25/8 and la jumpa (the song I’m currently listening to as I write this article.)

In closing, the rise of Luka Dončić has been fun to watch. I am an avid NBA fan, and I think not only has he revolutionized the NBA, but he has also introduced the NBA to audiences across the globe who have not been familiar. Luka magic is here to say.
