Is The Orlando Magic The Next Great Team?

Orlando Magic the Next Great Team

While the Orlando Magic have spent several seasons rebuilding, the franchise could be about to enter its next era of success. The team could be poised to be one of the best teams in the Eastern Conference in the future. Is the Orlando Magic the next great team?

Could the Orlando Magic be the NBA’s Next Great Team?

The Orlando Magic have been in a rebuild for several seasons. Orlando made the playoffs in 2019 and 2020, but was eliminated in the first round in both seasons. The Magic haven’t advanced past the opening round of the playoffs since 2010, when they lost in the Eastern Conference Finals against the Boston Celtics.

After trading away Nikola Vucevic, Aaron Gordon, and Evan Fournier the Magic entered a full rebuild in 2021. The franchise has done a good job of building its roster, and now Orlando could be poised to return to contention in the near future.

Markelle Fultz, Cole Anthony Lead Strong Group of Guards

Markelle Fultz was traded to the Magic in 2019 after two seasons in Philadelphia where he dealt with injuries after being the first pick in the 2017 NBA Draft. Fultz has only played 131 games across five seasons, but he still has the potential to develop into a tremendous NBA player.

Cole Anthony, the Magic’s first-round pick in the 2020 NBA Draft, has started to develop into a very good player. Last season saw Anthony improve his points per game, assists per game, and rebounds per game as compared to his rookie season. He is a very important part of the Magic’s future within the NBA.

During last season, Jalen Suggs dealt with injuries in his first year in the NBA. Suggs played only 48 games during his rookie season. However, he still averaged 11.8 points per game, and the Magic expect him to take a huge step forward next season, and be a huge piece in making the Orlando Magic the next great team.

Terrence Ross, RJ Hampton, and Gary Harris add depth at the guard positions for the team. While the Magic’s overall shooting from the guard positions needs to improve, Ross is one of the best shooters on the team. Hampton continues to develop and Harris provides excellent depth.

The Magic’s backcourt needs to continue to develop, but the franchise has built a group of talented, young players who should have an exciting future. As the backcourt continues to develop, it will support a talented group of frontcourt players led by Paolo Banchero and NBA All-Rookie Team member Franz Wagner.

Banchero, Wagner Part of Exciting Frontcourt Group

In working towards the Orlando Magic the next great team, one of the most exciting storylines for the Magic in 2021-22 was the development of Franz Wagner. The 8th pick in the 2021 NBA Draft, Wagner averaged 15.2 points per game in his first season in the NBA and had a 46.8% field goal percentage.

Wagner is a player the Magic can begin to build around, and Paolo Banchero should be excellent playing alongside him. Banchero had two excellent games in the NBA Summer League before the Magic decided he won’t take part in any of the team’s remaining Summer League games.

Wendell Carter, Jr. was traded to the Magic in the deal that sent Vucevic to Chicago. He’s been excellent in Orlando, and he agreed to a contract extension with the team last season. In addition, it seemed like the Magic may allow Mo Bamba to depart the team in free agency in part due to Carter, but Bamba signed a contract to return to the Magic at the start of free agency. Bamba and Carter will provide excellent depth and talent in the frontcourt.

Jonathan Isaac should also return from an injury ahead of next season. Isaac hasn’t played since 2020 due to injuries, but he was having a solid season before his injury in 2020, and he could be an important player for the Magic this season as Wagner and Banchero continue to develop in the quest for the Orlando Magic the next great team.

Chuma Okeke, Caleb Houstan, Mortiz Wagner, and others could provide important depth for the frontcourt in the future. Meanwhile, Carter, Wagner, and Banchero represent one of the most exciting frontcourt groups for the Magic in recent memory.

Orlando now has a group of good, young players at every position, and the team could be nearing the end of its rebuild. In the future, this group of players could make the Orlando Magic the next great team at best, or at least one of the best teams in the Eastern Conference, and lead the franchise to the most playoff success it has had since 2010.

They are poised, but can the Orlando Magic the next great team?
