The NBA has evolved from the Big 3 and superteam era. Now, most championship teams are built around a star duo, with some other important role players.
Some of the very best teams in the league feature a talented duo. Which NBA team has the best duo? Let’s rank the top five duos in the NBA right now.
5. Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown
The Boston Celtics reached the NBA Finals last year. A huge part of that was because Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown have continued to elevate their game to the next level.
By now, Tatum and Brown are one of the most elite scoring punches in the NBA. They have both started off the 2022-23 NBA season averaging at least 25 points per game.
The most interesting thing about Brown and Tatum is that they are the youngest duo on this list. Brown is just 26 years old, while Tatum is only 24. They still have plenty of room to grow as stars in this league.
4. James Harden and Joel Embiid
We haven’t had the opportunity to see Harden and Embiid play a full season together yet, but there is no denying that the talent is there. James Harden, a former MVP who once averaged 36 points in a season, is joining forces with one of the most dominant centers in the league, who was an MVP candidate himself recently.
The Philadelphia 76ers can be one of the best teams in the league this year under the leadership of James Harden and Joel Embiid. They need more time to figure out how to play with each other in order to get the most out of each player.
3. Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving
Offensively speaking, Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving are the most talented duo in the NBA. Durant is a former MVP who is averaging 31 points per game this season. Irving is an elite shotmaker who is averaging 27 points per game this year.
The future of this Brooklyn duo is unclear. What is clear is that when they are on the court together, they get buckets.
2. LeBron James and Anthony Davis
LeBron James and Anthony Davis won a championship together in 2020. Overall, they are the best duo on this list. LeBron James is a four-time champion and four-time league MVP. Anthony Davis is one of the best two-way players in the league when healthy.
The reason this duo does not get the number one spot is because the Lakers are off to a 2-10 start to the season. It is even a little difficult to rationalize ranking them as the second-best duo. When you see that LeBron is averaging 25 points, nine rebounds and seven assists; and that Anthony Davis is averaging more combined steals and blocks than any other player, the ranking makes more sense.
1. Giannis Antetokounmpo and Khris Middleton
Giannis Antetokounmpo and Khris Middleton have earned the reputation as the best duo in the NBA over the last couple of years. Khris Middleton might be the least talented individual player on this list. However, he is still a very skilled scorer that complements Giannis very well.
Plus, Giannis is a two-time MVP and former Defensive Player of the Year who keeps getting better. He might be the best player in the league right now, and is the main reason why the Bucks are 10-2 right now. When Middleton returns from injury, he will help the Bucks continue a great start to the season.
