The Golden State Warriors are clearly the best team in basketball right now, However, if they added Karl-Anthony Towns, they’d be nearly unstoppable.
The Warriors made a statement to the league that they’re back in their recent dominant victory against the Brooklyn Nets at the Barclays Center.
KAT Would Make Them Unstoppable
Towns is arguably the best shooting big of all time, as he shoots nearly 40 percent from three on four 3-pointers per game for his career.
This season, Towns is averaging a career-high 45.7 percent from downtown on just over seven attempts per night.
In the Warriors’ offense, Towns would have to worry much less about creating his own shot and can afford to be even more of a catch-and-shoot specialist from behind the arc, which are instances he gets most of his 3-point attempts off anyway.
Just picture Stephen Curry and a healthy Klay Thompson already out there for opposing defenses to have to worry about guarding out there.
We all know what Curry can do with the ball in his hands. He will shoot no matter who’s on him or where he’s at on the court, and find success more times than not.
In instances where he’s forced to give up the ball, however, not only will he have Thompson to kick it out to, but now he’ll have Towns.
If Towns finds himself inside rather than outside, then Curry can dump it down low to him as well, as Towns can use his post moves to convert easy looks inside.
KAT is also a threat to drive downhill either off the dribble handoff or a swing pass, and with the gravity he’ll attract, he can find Curry and Thompson in their spots as well.
Defensively, Big KAT has had his weaknesses, but with Draymond Green there to cover for those weaknesses, all Towns would have to worry about is serving as a help defender and coming up with timely blocks, where he could have much more success.
How the Warriors Can Pull Off This Trade
The Warriors have the pieces to get this deal done, with promising young players in James Wiseman, Jonathan Kuminga and Moses Moody at their disposal.
They’re also equipped with plenty of draft picks, which should honestly be seen as easily tradeable given how much KAT could help them win in the present.
Without Thompson, the Warriors are still seen as a threat to get to the NBA Finals out of the Western Conference, but if the Nets get Kyrie Irving back, which is something they’re going to have to prepare for, then their path to winning a championship becomes much more difficult.
With Towns, they’re arguably the favorites to beat the Nets even if they got Irving back.
It’s unknown if the Minnesota Timberwolves are even entertaining the possibility of trading KAT right now, but if Towns were to request a trade, it’d be fair to wonder if he’d rather be sent to the New York Knicks, as he grew up a fan of that team while living in Piscataway, NJ.
