Which NBA Team Has The Brightest Future?

NBA

The 2020’s will be a decade for new stars to shine in the NBA. As the generation of LeBron James, Steph Curry, and Kevin Durant gets older, a new generation takes their place to become the next faces of the NBA.

The NBA is in good hands, because the future is bright for many of the young stars we see today. Some teams are stacked with young talent.

When a team builds a team through the draft and develops their youth, they can often build a championship team. Look at the Golden State Warriors, for example. They drafted Steph Curry, Klay Thompson, and Draymond Green, who were all essential in leading the Warriors to four championships.

In this article, we consider which NBA team has the brightest future. This will consider age, talent, and what each team has already proven.

Weighing The Options

When you are talking about young teams with a bright future, you have to mention the Dallas Mavericks. With Luka Doncic alone, they have a chance to compete every year in the playoffs. He is arguably a top five player in the NBA, and he is only 23!

Other honorable mentions are the Cleveland Cavaliers and the Oklahoma City Thunder. The Cavs showed signs last year that they can compete when they are healthy. They have a talented young duo with Darius Garland and Evan Mobley, and they might turn Collin Sexton into another asset.

The Thunder have a few talented young players, but what makes OKC special is that they have more first round picks in the next five years than any other team. They are bound to draft some stars with all of those picks. Their draft pick last night in Chet Holmgren might end up being that guy.

The top three teams with the brightest future right now are the Boston Celtics, the Memphis Grizzlies, and the New Orleans Pelicans. All three teams have a great young core and have proven that they can compete at a high level.

Starting with the Boston Celtics, they have one of the best young duos in Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown. They have already made several deep playoff runs, most recently being this year’s trip to the NBA Finals.

The Memphis Grizzlies have one of the best young stars in Ja Morant. He is surrounded by several other good young players, such as Desmond Bane and Jaren Jackson Jr. Bane is a great shooter and scorer, while Jackson is an elite rim protector on the defensive end. The Grizzlies need to achieve more in the playoffs, but they earned the second-best record in the NBA this year. No one saw that coming.

Finally, we have the New Orleans Pelicans. The Pelicans proved themselves this year. After a horrible start to the season, they traded for C.J. McCollum and turned things around. In the playoffs, they put up a good battle with the top-seeded Suns before falling short, all without Zion Williamson playing the whole season. Next year, they will have Zion, Ingram, McCollum, Herbert Jones, and more players coming through the draft.

The Verdict

Right now, the Boston Celtics have to be considered the team with the brightest future in the NBA. With all that the Celtics have already accomplished, we sometimes forget that Jayson Tatum is only 24 years old. Jaylen Brown will only be 26 next season.

In the Jayson Tatum era, the Celtics have made three Conference Finals appearances and one NBA Finals appearance. In his rookie season, he went head-to-head against LeBron James and the Cavaliers. The series went to a game seven, despite the fact that LeBron was having a historic postseason and the Celtics were missing their star player in Kyrie Irving.

That series was only a small sample size of what Tatum was capable of. He developed as an all-around superstar in the NBA.

Jaylen Brown also developed into a well-rounded star. We have seen both players improve their playmaking and defense, especially Tatum.

During the 2020 playoffs in the bubble, the Celtics had some more experience. They reached the Eastern Conference Finals, but lost to the Miami Heat.

Last season, they got their revenge and defeated the Miami Heat in seven games. They ended up losing to the Warriors in the Finals, but showed that they could be a championship team in the future.

The biggest change for the Celtics was their transition from a good defensive team to a great one. They added physicality with Al Horford and Grant Williams. They trusted Robert Williams III to play more minutes as a starter. They also trusted Marcus Smart to be the starting point guard. He ended up winning the Defensive Player of the Year.

Of the players mentioned, only one of them is over 30 years old. There is still a lot of work to do for this team to win the championship, but they will inch closer as all of these players grow together each year.

The Celtics are already one of the best teams in the NBA and their young core still has room to improve. For that reason, they have the brightest future in the NBA. It is very likely that they win at least one championship in the near future.
