The Memphis Tigers have never won a National Title. They have been close a few times over the school’s history. However, it is hard for them to be contenders year in and year out.
Memphis is not in one of the more well known conferences in the country. They are not a typical powerhouse. However, things are changing down there.
Penny Hardaway brings star power there as the head coach. He has been at his alma mater for the last three years working with the school and community. There is a culture being built there.
Now, it is time to take that next level. He has added top notch recruits and incredible assistants. Are the Memphis Tigers contenders this season, and maybe beyond?
The Team Looks Great
Before we begin on the players that Memphis has for this upcoming season; let’s look at the staff. Penny Hardaway brings the pizzazz on the sideline. This summer, they added former NBA player Rasheed Wallace, along with Hall of Fame coach Larry Brown. Their staff is incredible in terms of name recognition.
Then there is the roster. Memphis has assembled a team that can go toe-to-toe with the best squads in the country. They have a great mix of young studs with veterans.
Emoni Bates and Jalen Duren were the top two players in the 2022 recruiting class. However, they both decided to reclassify into this year’s class and commit to Memphis. Both of these talented young stars are in contention for the number one pick of next year’s draft.
Also, they grabbed Earl Timberlake, who is a transfer from Miami. Timberlake was supposed to be a one and done player, but struggled to catch on at Miami. Then there is Deandre Williams.
Williams was a transfer last season for the Tigers. Williams is a 6”9’ point forward. Memphis went 16-4 with him and 4-3 without him.
The roster has some other key players, such as Landers Nolley, Lester Quinones, and Josh Minott. They have depth and potential star players. Memphis looks like a top team on paper.
Can They Win it All?
Memphis is looking to claim their first ever National Title. This is going to be their best shot since 2008 when they were led by future NBA MVP, Derrick Rose. What are the odds for Memphis to actually be a contender this season?
After Bates committed to the Tigers, their odds skyrocketed. They begun the summer at +4000 odds at Pointsbet to win it all, but sit at +1800. Their odds to make the Final Four were +1300 before Bates and now are sitting at +500.
The Tigers are actual contenders this year. Coach Hardaway has built this school into a must see team this season. The future might even look bright for them.
